HOW TO GET HERE

SANSEPOLCRO

Sansepolcro is a small town in Tuscany between Umbria, Marche and Emilia Romagna. It is a Renaissance village which saw the birth of one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, Piero della Francesca. It is a peripheral place so there are no direct trains arriving in the town but there are many solutions to be adopted. Here are our recommendations.

  • BY CAR E45 (from Cesena and Orte) – This is the highway that will easily take you to Sansepolcro both from northern Italy, passing through Ravenna and Cesena, and from southern Italy, passing through Orte. From Cesena and Perugia you can easily reach Sansepolcro in less than an hour. Take the exit ‘Sansepolcro nord’. A1/E35 (from Florence and Rome). Take the exit ‘Arezzo’ and then continue following signs for Sansepolcro.
  • BY TRAIN AND BY BUS Arezzo – The nearest and most convenient station is in Arezzo. In front of the Arezzo station it is possible to take an ‘Autolinee Toscane’ bus which will take you to Sansepolcro in an hour. At this link you can find the timetables by calculating the itinerary: https://www.at-bus.it/it Perugia – Another solution, albeit less practical, is to arrive in Perugia by train and then take the bus to the Ponte San Giovanni station. From there it is possible to take a train to Città di Castello and then a bus to Sansepolcro for a total journey of about 3-4 hours. The train and bus timetables can be viewed on the Trenitalia website.
  • SULGA BUS From Rome Fiumicino and Rome Tiburtina – If you are coming from Rome, there is a solution offered by the ‘SULGA’ company: in fact, there is a bus which, starting from ‘Roma Fiumicino’ airport and stopping in ‘Roma Tiburtina’ station, allows you to get directly to Sansepolcro. There is only one bus a day which takes (from Fiumicino to Sansepolcro) about four and a half hours. Here you can find more information: https://www.sulga.it/wp-content/uploads/Tariffario-Ravenna-online-2023.pdf Please note: the Sulga runs are from Monday to Saturday. This solution is also available from Ravenna.
  • BY PLANERome Fiumicino/Bologna/Florence – If you prefer to fly, the most practical airports are ‘Roma Fiumicino’ (from there you can take the Sulga bus) or Bologna and Florence, (from there you can reach the central stations with a bus and than take the train).

CORTONA

Part of the festival takes place in another charming village in Tuscany which is the birthplace, among others, of the painter Luca Signorelli. The city of Cortona has a strong tourist vocation and its position, on the Rome-Florence line, makes it easily accessible. Here are some travel solutions that we offer

  • BY CAR A1/E35 – Getting to Cortona by car is definitely the most convenient solution and it is possible via the A1 and E35. Whether you arrive from the north or the south, the exit to take is Valdichiana and follow the signs that lead to Cortona.
  • BY TRAIN AND BUS
Florence/Rome – There are direct lines that can take you to Cortona in a few hours without changes: both from Florence and Rome, your stop is ‘Camucia-Cortona’ (NOT ‘Terontola-Cortona’). The train will leave you in Camucia, a neighborhood located at the foot of the hill where you’ll find the historic center of Cortona, where the festival takes place.
Bus/SU5 line – At that point you can take a bus to reach the center. The buses run very frequently (in correspondence with the arrival of the trains) between Camucia and Cortona Piazza Garibaldi. The first departure is at 11:45 in the morning, and the last departure from Camucia is at 21:02, arriving in Cortona Piazza Garibaldi at 21:09. The cost is 1 euro. All services travel direct and take an average of 5 min. You can find the timetables at the following link: TIMETABLE
  • BY PLANE Roma Fiumicino/Florence/Bologna – The preferable choices are the airports of Florence, Bologna and Rome which can take you directly to ‘Camucia-Cortona’ by train.
  • GETTING TO CORTONA FROM SANSEPOLCRO There is no train to reach Cortona from Sansepolcro. For this reason it is convenient to take the ‘Autolinee Toscane’ bus from Sansepolcro to Arezzo (https://www.at-bus.it/it) and then the train from Arezzo to Cortona.
