PARTICIPATING IS NORMAL<\/p>\n
A few years ago we were in Yunnan, in Shangri-La. At the highest point of a hill is the largest Tibetan prayer wheel in the world: it measures twenty-four meters. A group of locals were trying to spin it, however, it was too big for them to do it on their own. They were looking in our direction and that of other foreigners there, too shy to ask for our help. All of us approached, because participating was normal. Spinning that wheel together, with effort, while a gentleman shouted “Y\u012b, \u00e8r, s\u0101n” (one, two, three, in Chinese), and having its prayers reverberate throughout the valley, is an image we carry with us, alive, long after the fact.<\/p>\n
We develop a lot of actions to engage people, which in theater we call an audience. This happens because at some point participating was no longer so normal. We would like that in the long run there would be no more need for all these projects, that is, for theaters and other cultural venues to become full again without yet another proposal for spectator involvement. We would like a big wheel to start turning again, all together, even if we speak different languages and come from different cultures, for individuals to feel that taking part is more fun than staying on the sidelines.<\/p>\n
Taking part is normal because we are human beings. Just by making a simple gesture, we can remove ourselves from the sides and share an invitation. Theater is a good place to start putting yourself out there again.<\/p>\n
